Hey all -- had our 4th DCC Greyhawk Session last night, and it's a good thing I got my disapproval charts done for the two 1st level cleric PCs... there were 4 disapproval rolls in the session.
I'm doing disapproval by alignment, not specific to any god (although I might swap out a few results on the chart for something thematic). I went through the DCC Annual and took the results I liked and attributed them to one of the nine alignments, and then filled in the gaps.
Just for fun, all the random numbers are consistent for each alignment, Chaotic Good uses 1d4, Lawful Good uses 1d6, Lawful Evil uses 1d10 and so on. Think of it as a 'forgiveness' metric ...
Let me know what you think! Drop me a note to archadethered@gmail.com.
I'll be working on the other alignments and posting them as I get them done ...
Table 5-7a: Lawful Good Deity Disapproval
Disfavour Result |
|
0 or less |
The cleric knows their god is displeased, but in their
mercy has held their wroth. Increase disapproval
range by a further 1 point. |
1 |
The cleric knows that their god is displeased, they
must loudly offer prayers of forgiveness for 10 minutes, or suffer -1 to all idol
magic, lay on hands, or turn unholy checks until performed. |
2 |
The cleric must reflect on their wrongdoings,
meditating in devotional prayer as soon as possible (eg. after the conclusion
of combat). |
3 |
Mere words will not satisfy their deity and the cleric
must show through deeds that they are truly committed – provide 50 gp of
sacrifice to the church or 8 hours of labour to the church or community, or suffer -1 to all idol magic and cleric abilities until
performed. |
4 |
Purity of the body will purify the soul, the cleric
must fast for 6 days. While fasting the
cleric suffers 1 point of Stamina damage that will not heal until the fasting
is complete. |
5 |
|
6 |
The cleric’s deity is displeased, and revokes use of
the idol magic spell or clerical ability that triggered the disfavour for 1d6
days. |
7 |
The cleric has become brash, and must compose
themselves – they must not complain of any misfortune for a full day, or
suffer -1 to all idol magic and cleric abilities until performed. |
8 |
The cleric feels the distance of their deity, and
suffers -2 to all cleric spells or abilities until the next day. |
9 |
The cleric’s pleas fall on their deity’s deaf ears –
Disapproval cannot be reduced or reset for the next 6 days. |
10 |
It is known to the cleric that their deity wishes them
to be more self-reliant. Each of their
clerical spells or abilities can only be used once per day for the next 6
days. |
11 |
Great labours are required to prove the cleric’s
worth. For each day of 8 hours labour
given to their church or community, the cleric may make a DC 15 cleric check
to earn forgiveness, or suffer -2 to all idol magic and cleric abilities
until completed. |
12 |
The deity has turned their back on their cleric. They lose access to all clerical spells and
abilities until a sacrifice worth at least 100 gp per cleric level is given
to their church or community. |
13 |
The cleric has become unclean, tainted by evil and
chaos that pervades the world. They
lose the ability to lay on hands until they can be fully submerged in truly
pure waters. |
14 |
Clerical spells and abilities are meant for the truly worthy
only. The cleric may not lay on hands
or use beneficial clerical spells for non-Lawful Good creatures – any attempt
to do otherwise will result in the spell failing (and gaining further Disapproval). |
15 |
The cleric’s deity is wrathful, and strikes the cleric
blind – this can only be cured by another Lawful Good cleric laying on hands
upon the cleric, and achieving at least a 4 Hit Die result. |
16 |
Clearly the deity believes they have been too generous
with the cleric who has misused their powers.
The cleric loses a random spell of the highest level they can cast
permanently. They may learn another
spell or the same spell again if they find a holy text and can make a
learning check equal to DC 10 + the level of the spell. |
17 |
The cleric’s deity smites them, doing 1d6 points of subdual
damage for every level of the clerical spell being attempted, or the level of
the cleric if using a clerical ability.
Subdual damage heals at a rate of 1 point per hour of rest. |
18 |
All clerical abilities and spells are lost to the
cleric who has offended their deity for 1d6 x 1d6 days. |
19 |
As the cleric has asked too much of their deity, they
in turn take away from them. Suffer
1d6 ability damage to Strength, Agility and Stamina. If any ability is reduced to 0, the cleric
perishes. |
20 or more |
The wrathful deity of the cleric gives them their full,
undivided attention. The cleric seeing
their deity’s visage must make a DC 20 Will save or be struck blind and
deaf. If they succeed they are only
stunned for the next 2d6 turns. |
Table 5-7c: Chaotic Good Deity Disapproval
Xd4 |
Disfavour Result |
0 or less |
The cleric
knows their god is disapproving, but in their mercy will forgive their cleric
in time. Increase disapproval range by
a further 1d4 points. |
1 |
The deity thinks the cleric asks a lot of
them, and demands they perform an act of kindness for a stranger – until they
do so, Disapproval cannot be recovered. |
2 |
The cleric
must donate at least 10 gp of money or goods to their church or
community. Until they do so,
Disapproval cannot be recovered. |
3 |
The gentle rebuke of their deity haunts the
cleric’s mind, making them question their choices. Roll -1d for any Initiative checks for the
next 1d4 days. |
4 |
The cleric
feels the compulsion to find a new follower of their deity. To convert a follower, at least an hour of
conversation is required, followed by a DC 15 cleric check (1d20 plus Personality
modifier plus Cleric level), or suffer -1 to all idol magic and cleric
abilities until performed. |
5 |
The cleric’s fickle god removes the ability
to cast one highest level spell for 1d4 days. |
6 |
The cleric’s
deity is displeased, and revokes use of the idol magic spell or clerical
ability that triggered the disfavour for 1d4 days. |
7 |
The whims of the gods are beyond
comprehension – have the cleric make a Luck check, if they succeed, they are
granted +1 to all cleric spell checks and cleric ability checks for 1d4
days. If they fail, they suffer 1d4
points of temporary Personality damage as their deity lashes their mind. |
8 |
The cleric
feels the indifference of their deity, and suffers -2 to all cleric spells or
abilities for the next 1d4 days. |
9 |
Unfortunately the cleric has gained the
attention of their deity, who challenges them in unique ways. For the next day, the cleric suffers a -1d4
adjustment to all physical ability checks and saving throws. |
10 |
The cleric’s
deity wishes to remind them that all living creatures deserve to make their
own way in the world – the cleric suffers -1d to all attack rolls or spells
attempting to harm another for the next 1d4 days. |
11 |
Clerics are found in disfavour by their
deity which has wider repercussions, losing 1d3 points of Luck. |
12 |
The
capricious nature of the cleric’s deity results in their next 1d4 spell
failures or failures to use a clerical ability resulting in Spell Misfires as
an arcane caster rolling a natural 1. |
13 |
The cleric is temporarily turned away from
their deity, losing the ability to gain XP for a day. |
14 |
The deity
believes the cleric must learn to be more self-sufficient. All clerical spells and clerical abilities
are lost for 1d4 days. |
15 |
Tired of their incessant prayers, the deity
of the cleric is struck mute for 1d4 days.
While mute, they cannot cast spells, but can still use clerical
abilities such as lay on hands or turn unholy bit at -1d. |
16 |
The ways the
cleric has annoyed their deity cannot be easily described. Roll twice for disfavour results and apply
both. |
17 |
The cleric is cursed with the great unluck
by their deity. Suffer a -4 penalty to
Luck and all Luck checks, including rolling the body, suffer -2d. This curse can only be lifted with a great pilgrimage
or quest. |
18 |
The deity
believes that the cleric needs to be challenged – at some point in the next
1d4 days, a great beast of at least double the cleric’s level in Hit Dice
will present itself. |
19 |
The ire of the cleric’s deity cannot be
overstated. For the next 2d4 days,
roll 1d4 on this disapproval chart each day. |
20 or more |
The deity
opens the mind of the caster to the great cosmos, but at great cost. The cleric gains 1d4 XP but also takes on a
phobia, mania or other form of insanity. |
