Next up, for my Barrowmaze dungeon located
in my campaign world of Aquerria, the Spectral Dead.
These don’t seem to be
anything mythic or have clear OD&D origins, but they do evoke the Dead Men
of Dunharrow from Lord of the Rings, and are a nice short stat block. I made it a very weak variant of the Ghost in
the DCC Core Rulebook, because they are likely to be encountered in numbers ... but because
things should always be unexpected in DCC, I gave them a ‘pass through’ attack
that isn’t too scary, but certainly unsettling when you ask your players for a
saving throw just from the monsters milling about and swooshing through them.
Here are my version of
the spectral dead. Comments, questions,
or suggested changes can be sent to archadethered@gmail.com
The spectral dead are incorporeal spirits of warriors interred long ago. They have heard the call to rise, but with their physical forms rendered unto dust, only their spirits remain to wander, striking out at the living, which they hate with all of their forsaken souls.
Spectral Dead: Init +2;
Atk spectral weapon +4 melee (1d6 plus 1d4 cold); AC 14; HD 2d12 (13 hp); MV 30’;
Act 1d20; SP un-dead, immune to non-magical attacks; SV Fort +4, Ref +6, Will +4;
AL C.
These spirits are incorporeal, and can pass through doors, walls, and
other obstructions. If they happen to pass
through a living creature, it must make a DC 6 Fortitude save or suffer 1d4
cold damage.
They are un-dead, and thus can be turned by clerics. They do not eat, drink, or breathe, and are
immune to critical hits, disease, and poison. As un-dead, they are immune to sleep and hold spells, as well as other mental effects and
cold damage.
