Last night, I was doing our semi-annual traditional Hobbit/Lord of the Rings movie marathon (which takes a couple days, let me tell you), and I
thought I’d flesh out my world a bit – do you hate coming up with taverns and
inns on the fly? One of the things I loved, loved loved about Harn as a campaign world is they put in all sorts of small details into mundane locations to make them seem, well, real. I took a locales already fleshed out in my campaign gazeteer by a few bullet points, and added in a few
details.
The
Brazen Strumpet Inn
(Anzagort): A weathered but cozy inn with a narrow, long and twisting great
hall, and a railed balcony upstairs that overlooks the hall. Dark wood and faded tapestry hanging decorate
the inn, interspersed with candelabras for a dim, subdued environment. The gallery is typically used for gambling
with dice and cards, and the serving maids are some of the best, able to weave
in and out of the crowded travellers and tables at a breakneck speed without
spilling a single drop.
The proprietor of the Brazen Strumpet is
Dwynwyn, a raven haired woman of short stature and fiery temperament. She is fiercely protective of her staff, and
should anyone prove to be a poor guest, they are evicted and never welcomed
back. Dwynwyn grew up a street urchin in
Anzagort, and has carved out a modest living through sheer determination. She is often courted to join the Beggars’
Brotherhood, but is not interested, having left the questionable lifestyle of
the dark alleys for one of stability and prosperity. She has a soft spot in her thick skin for
anyone trying to make a better life for themselves. Her husband, Elnnar, works at the brewery
across town and has all the patience in the world.
The serving maids are Merinka a quet
middle-aged woman with long blonde hair, Verinda the humorous halfling maid
with curly brown hair, and Ryla, a no-nonsense woman with cropped black hair
and surprising strength for her slim frame.
The cooks are Elnnar, who prepares the
pies, platters and stew pot before he heads to the brewery at dawn, and Ryla
who minds the food during the day – they often sell out, so if anyone shows up
at 5 bells in the afternoon or later, make a Luck check to see if there’s
anything left other than pot scrapings.
Greyvin also works at the inn as the
stable boy, and he secretly works for the Beggars’ Brotherhood, passing
information and occasionally lifting items from saddlebags if left unobserved. Greyvin has a stammer, and is socially
awkward, and only works for the Beggars as they have earned his trust with
respect and praise.
Menu: Pig pot pie served in a bread
bowl (3 sp), Tankard of Elshaveer amber ale (5 cp), bacon and potato platter (2
sp), pot scrapings and stale bread (5 cp).
Lodging: sleep on the floor in the
balcony once the inn clears out, with a loaned blanket (6 cp), a bed in one of
the four inn rooms that hold two beds (5 sp each), one of the four private inn
rooms (8 sp)
Stable: feed (7 cp), stabling (7 sp
